Cendrillon Art Deco Cover Redesign

In this project I wanted to rework a classic fairytale story and give it a new look. Cendrillon is the original French telling of Cinderella. Sticking with the french theme, I decided to create an art deco cover design inspired by the work of legendary french art deco poster artist A.M Cassandre. The art deco style is characterized by angular lines, geometric patterns, and most importantly, decorative and elegant details. Cassandre's style often includes soft gradients and grainy shading which I chose to emulate in this design. I borrowed the angular lines and shading style of art deco and used it to create a composition that replicates what it is like to peer through crystal.
I wanted to incorporate a fragmented geometric designed inspired by vintage art deco posters. I applied a soft blend of grainy gradients as well as a period appropriate typeface to give it a deco feel.
I explored many different concepts by creating thumbnail sketches for my final design. I wanted to experiment with different iconic elements from this classic fairytale such as the glass slipper. In the end I found that this symbol was most appropriate as the alternate title for this story is "The Glass Slipper".
